According to a Bloomberg report, Nokia would consider Apple a potential buyer of its Nokia HERE Maps application. The report states that the Finnish company would be trying to sell its mapping division due to loss of revenue , let’s remember that Nokia bought the tools for its maps in 2008 for about 8 billion dollars, now it would be looking to sell them for about 3 billion.
Besides Apple, Nokia may have other important options to sell Nokia HERE Maps, these companies would be Facebook, Baidu, Sirius XM, Amazon and Alibaba. It should be noted that in addition to the big drop that its mapping service has suffered, Nokia would also like to get rid of it to focus more on mobile devices and compete with companies like Huawei. This decision would be consolidated last week with the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent by Nokia.
Nokia HERE Maps would be a pretty good complement to Apple’s maps, which after a rather unfortunate launch, is gradually becoming what was expected from the company on the block. For many, the rival to overcome is Google Maps, since the big G map service is the most used even by many of the iOS users.
In early 2015, Nokia launched HERE Maps on the iPhone and has been introduced as one of the most widely used. For now we’ll have to wait to see what movements both Apple and Nokia follow. Do you think this purchase would be good for iOS users or do you prefer the market to be more fragmented?
