Two days ago the US patent office granted 29 new patents to Apple. Two of them are related to design with the iPad. One covers the design of the retail box and the other covers the exterior design of the device .
The last patent is quite important, as it covers the appearance of Apple’s famous tablets. You know a lot of people say that the apple can’t patent a rectangle with rounded edges, right? Well, just did it .
Patent number 286 is entitled “portable display device” , and literally covers a rectangular device. It is similar to Apple’s design patent 889, which helped win a large injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.
From ArsTechnica the information is extended:
It is not known whether this particular patent will be of much use to Apple in any possible lawsuit that might arise. Design patents are quite strict, so someone would have to copy it word for word to be accused of infringement based on this patent.
Apple has named Steve Jobs and Jony Ive as patent holders, along with Jody Akana Bartley Andre, Daniel Coster, Daniele De Luliis, Evans Hankey and other members of the Bite Apple company’s invention team.
