According to Vesterbacka, Android is growing, but also in complexity, not so much because of the fragmentation of devices but because of its ecosystem with a lot of different stores and business models. “Operators are getting their hands on the user experience again. Open but not really open, with an ecosystem too dependent on Google.”

Since its launch in December 2009, ‘Angry Birds’ has become a truly global phenomenon and although its sales started slowly, they soon took off to achieve the impossible: 50 million downloads and remain number one on the App Store for longer than any other.

In November, Rovio had to publicly apologize to Android users for the problems that many experienced after the launch of the game on the Google platform, with about thirty terminals from which it is completely impossible to enjoy it and performance problems caused by older versions of the operating system (according to Google, only 36% of new phones use the latest version of Android, a fact that should not be boasted precisely).

So far, the way Rovio has understood Google’s business model is to offer a free ad-based version of ‘Angry Birds’ for Android. What, Vesterbacka calls “Google-style” emphasizing that “Paid content just doesn’t work on Android” .
