Cupertino’s company filed a lawsuit against the “Amazon App Store” for having too much of a name, while Amazon is moving ahead with its new cloud music store with prices that are close to half of those in the iTunes Store. Now we enter a further front, as Amazon has opened an application store for Mac OS X that faces the Mac App Store.
The store, called the Mac Download Store, features ” 250 of the best programs available for Mac ” and some applications that are not present in the official Apple store but whose popularity is evident: Microsoft Office, Toast, a repertoire of Aspyr games… in addition, Amazon ensures that in the download we get only what we want, without annoying extras that can confuse us. And if we delete the program, we can download it as many times as we want from the store. There are no limitations.
Given this, it seems that the advantage of the Amazon application store will be the availability of some programs and games that have not stepped on the Mac App Store. The downside is that the Mac App Store integrates much more deeply with Mac OS X , especially with the upcoming arrival of Lion. And as with all other Amazon stores, we cannot use it in Spain. We will have to see how users in the United States react to this.
