During today’s Apple developer conference in San Jose, the company presented its new version of macOS, the desktop operating system. Catalina macOS is the new version that comes with great news in terms of software for Mac.
Apple has presented at WWC19 its latest operating system, macOS Catalina . This new version includes among other things a redesign of the Reminders or Notes apps. Although without a doubt one of the most expected changes that has finally arrived is the division of iTunes into different lighter and simpler apps.
Goodbye iTunes and new features in Catalina macOS
The first thing Apple has shown us is the disintegration of iTunes. The app has been separated into three different ones: Apple Music, Apple TV app and Apple Podcasts . What happened to the iPhone and iPad synchronization? Everything will now be managed from the Finder. The new apps that have emerged from iTunes are much lighter and simpler. Each one focused on its own function.
What else do we have in Catalina macos? Many more features, here are some of them:
- Sidecar: the ability to use the iPad as a second screen. Similar to what Luna Display did, but in an integrated way and directly between the Mac and the iPad.
- Accessibility and Voice Control: For the first time, you can fully control your Mac by voice.
- Find My: We can search our devices even if they are not connected to the Internet.
- Activation Lock: Allows unlocking and especially authenticating sessions and passwords more securely and quickly.
- Time of use: Similar to what we have on the iPhone and iPad from iOS 12.
More universal and redesigned apps with Project Catalyst
Apple has added new redesigned apps , including the new Photos app and the new Reminders app.
Forget Marzipan, the new name and official is Catalyst . With this new technology it is possible to migrate apps from the iPad to macOS. Developers will be able to easily create and especially export their apps to be compatible with the Mac. One of the first apps to return to macOS is Twitter, which has migrated its app from iOS to macOS.
Compatibility of Catalina Macs with older Macs
As every year, the latest version of macOS can only be installed on the most modern computers. In this case the minimum requirements to officially install Catalina macOS are as follows:
- MacBook 2015 or later
- MacBook Air 2012 or later
- MacBook Pro 2012 or later
- Mac mini 2012 or later
- iMac 2012 or later
- Mac Pro 2013 or later
Date and availability of Catalina macaques
As with iOS, watchOS and previous versions of macOS, we will have to wait a little while to see this version for all users. Apple will release a beta for developers available from today . In the coming weeks and over the next three months we will have new versions of the more polished beta. Also a public beta in mid-July for those registered in Apple’s public beta program.
The final version is expected to reach all users in the autumn . Usually in early October Apple releases the final version. Although at the moment we don’t have an exact date.
