You no longer need an Apple TV media center to equip our TV with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. The Cupertino team decided to support these technologies with some of the main manufacturers . Many Samsung models already include them, and they are also available in several LG models. Now it’s Sony’s turn.
The Japanese multinational based in Tokyo decided not to develop its own operating system for smart TVs, as Samsung did with Tizen or LG with webOS, but adopted Android TV , the Google platform.
AirPlay 2 and HomeKit come to Sony TVs via a software update: Android TV 9. This version also includes support for Dolby Atmos . As discussed in Cult of Mac , the update will come in stages, and if your TV model is not on the list of supported devices you will never receive support for these features:
- 2018: A9F, Z9F
- 2019: A9G, Z9G, X950G, X850G
With AirPlay 2 we can send the content of our iPhone, iPad or Mac to the TV. This is important if you want to play Apple TV+ content on it, because unfortunately there are no plans to bring the Apple TV application to Sony TVs , unlike Samsung’s, which is already available.
